Hosting

First, "Hello!"  I'm Ben, the guy who designs and updates idiologic.com and idiopod.com.  And I'm happy you've stumbled upon my hosting page. 

Let's face it.  I have a lot of storage space and bandwidth and I also need some good publicity.  I won't lie to you, I need publicity and that's where you come in.  I'm not doing this to be "in control" of anything.  I'm not power hungry.  I'm not going to take down your hosted site because you used too many vowels, posted a Photoshopped picture of me with my head in the toilet or whatever.  I'm not going to take your site down for calling me ugly, stupid or a big fat pig.  One of the reasons I have a website is to express myself the way I want to.  I don't expect you to hide your personal feelings either (but unfortunately, I do impose some ground rules or guidelines.)

The servers can handle PHP, Perl, Phython, CGI, SSI, WebDav and a lot of other things.  (If I'm not technical enough, go here to find out what else is included.)

You should be able to use FTP/SFTP.  I don't really care what your graphics skills are like because I know mine aren't worth writing home about.  Plus, I'm not a huge fan (personally) of heavy-graphics sites.  One thing is for sure, you should know how to understand basic code.  That means, if someone took away Dreamweaver or other kind of designer away, you wouldn't cry.

I can't supply your own .com, .net or .org domain for free.  I can give you a subdomain at one of my domains for free though..

I can host you for free, for a few dollars per month or you can open your own independent account.  Below is a chart of options you have:

Hosting FAQ

Q:  What is definitely not allowed?

As I've said before, I am not power hungry.  I don't want to really tell you what you CAN and CAN'T do but sometimes, people like to do horrible things.  And those horrible things can lead to ME and YOU getting in a lot trouble.  No one wants that.  So that's why I have to set down some ground rules:

• No sites will be hosted that promote violence, hate, bigotry, sexism, drug use, etc.  Basically nothing that will hurt a group of people's feelings or make them bitter to the point where they're standing outside my house with pitchforks and torches.  (If you need clarification on this just ask.. no "how-to" videos and stuff.)
• Illegal stuff like warez, spamming, etc are not welcome.
• Your media MUST be made by you.  Don't allow people to steal music, videos or other files you did not create.
• Sites whose essential purpose is to use disk space or bandwidth such as a site created primarily to drive traffic to another site, file upload / sharing / archive / backup / mirroring / distribution sites.

Q:  Who do you host now?

Q:  Can I host only a podcast?

Sure, I like podcasts but make sure you have a website to go with it, even if it's a page or two.

Q:  Is 'unlimited' really unlimited?

What I mean is that you won't have to worry about network transfer under normal use.  However, if your site isn't well optimized and is causing issues for others on the shared server, you will be asked to clean your site up and your site will be temporarily suspended until it is.

What's not allowed is sites whose essential purpose is to use disk space or bandwidth such as a site created primarily to drive traffic to another site, file upload / sharing / archive / backup / mirroring / distribution sites. 

Q:  What web software can you install for me?

WordPress, Gallery, ZenCart (not available with free option), PhpGedView, Pligg, Moodle, Joomla, phpBB, MediaWiki, WebCalendar or Advanced Poll.  If you ask nicely, I'll add an account for you with MovableType.

Q:  How do I know that you're not just going to shut your websites down?

Ah, good question.  Idiologic has been around for years now.  IdioPod.com is just as old.  If I would have given up on them, they'd be dead already.  If I do shut down one or the other, you'll know about it.  In advance.  I promise.  Both sites are registered until mid-2010.

Also, if you ever decide to leave my awesome network of hosting, I'll leave a link or redirection to your new site.  I'm just that nice.

Q:  I don't really want a subdomain like "something.idiologic.com".  Can't I get something like "idiologic.com/something"?

Sorry, no.

Q:  What else should I know?

• I only host around 5 people at a time.
• Sites should be uploaded as soon as possible.  Disused sites WILL be removed after 2 weeks.
• I don't have time or patience to install tons of software for you.  I'm sorry.  If you need WordPress or PHPBB installed, I can do that for you.
• You must put a link to idiologic using text or by using one of the buttons on your pages if you go with the free option.
